The Black Creek Youth Initiative (BCYI) is dedicated to creating a nurturing and inclusive environment for the youth of the Black Creek communities in Toronto. Our mission is to provide programs and services tailored to combat and mitigate the issues young people face in their daily lives.

Central to our mission, BCYI hosts a dynamic 2-hour program every Thursday evening at the common room space located at 25 Martha Eaton Way. This program is designed for individuals aged 12 to 29 and has been actively engaging the community since December 2018. Through a variety of engaging activities and workshops, we aim to promote identity formation, community involvement, leadership development, and the establishment of positive peer networks, thereby encouraging wholesome youth development.  Our workshops cover essential skills such as time

management, budget-friendly cooking, organization, self-esteem and confidence building, and conflict resolution. Workshop materials are provided to give a clearer insight into our curriculum.

Our initiative strives to empower youth and young adults by equipping them with the necessary tools and resources to navigate systemic barriers effectively and enhance their mental wellness. BCYI adopts a youth-led approach, ensuring that the voices and decisions of the young people we serve are always front and center. We motivate them to become advocates for their community by initiating and executing innovative community projects.

The BCYI team comprises dedicated staff, volunteers, and consistently includes at least two placement students from the Social Service Work / Human Rights and Equity and Child and Youth Care departments of our partner institutions (York University, Toronto Metropolitan University, Seneca College). This team not only plans and leads the weekly workshops but also coordinates with external facilitators from community partners, legal entities, and mentors with relevant personal experiences and professional expertise to deliver specialized workshops (e.g., Cooking on a budget).

All programs and materials are provided free of charge to the participants, with an average weekly attendance of 25 to 30 youth.
